Clinical Opportunities
All clinical responsibilities and educational activities are at a single-site within the Level IV NICU at Oklahoma Children’s Hospital.
In our 107-bed NICU, we offer our patients therapeutic hypothermia, high-frequency ventilation, NAVA, extracorporeal life support (ECLS), and other advanced treatment modalities. Our clinical services are supported by all pediatric and surgical subspecialties.

Acute Care Teams
Our acute care teams may consist residents and medical students (West) or neonatal nurse practitioners (East 1 or 2) under the supervision of an attending physician
- Daily rounding with pharmacists, dietitians, and other auxiliary medical services
- Collaboration with pediatric and surgical subspecialists
Specialized Care Teams
Our dedicated NICU cardiac team manages perioperative and post-surgical critically-ill congenital heart disease patients.
Neonatal Cardiac
- Daily multidisciplinary rounds with cardiologists, cardiac intensivist, cardiovascular surgeons, and cardiac anesthesiologists as part of a dedicated NICU cardiac team
- Comprises 4 weeks inpatient clinical time per year
- Second-year of fellowship includes rotation through the cardiovascular ICU and operating room
Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia (BPD)
Our Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia (BPD) team consists of Neonatologists with expertise in management of BPD.
- Weekly multidisciplinary BPD team meetings to discuss current course and management plans, including PICU/TCU attendings, neonatal nurse practitioners, pharmacist, dietitian, physical therapy, social worker, case management, and nursing leadership
Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO)
Our Extracorporeal Life Support (ECLS) team consists of Neonatologist with special training and interest in ECMO support.
Fellow-led ECMO rounds under supervision of ECMO attending
- Monthly ECMO team meetings to discuss previous or current cases, guidelines and management, and case scenarios
Tranpsort, Labor & Delivery, and Consult (TLC)
Our Transport, Labor & Delivery, and Consult (TLC) team consists of a Neonatologist in addition to Fellow, Resident, and/or Neonatal Nurse Practitioner who work together to provide consults and coordinate care for new admissions including referrals.
- Attendance and resuscitation of high-risk deliveries
- Consultation for families expecting delivery of infants with cardiac, congenital, or chromosomal anomalies
- Management and triage of neonatal transport calls
Hemodynamics (TnECHO)
Our Hemodynamics team consists of Neonatologists who underwent additional specialized training in Neonatal Hemodynamics
- Close collaboration with cardiology and ECMO teams
- Guidance in management of neonatal hemodynamics including in relation to sepsis, cardiac dysfunction, hypotension, or patent ductus arteriosus
- Optional elective opportunity for fellows to learn basics of TnECHO, additional pathophysiology, and practice under supervision of Hemodynamics team
Outpatient Care Teams
Our outpatient care teams bridge the gap in care of medically complex NICU graduates in our two outpatient clinics: short-term NICU follow-up (High-Risk Clinic) and neurodevelopmental follow-up (PremieR Clinic)
- High-Risk Clinic includes management of home oxygen, assessment of need for early intervention services, nutritional guidance, and caregiver support
- PremieR Clinic encompasses a multidisciplinary approach with neonatology, behavioral and developmental pediatrics, occupational & physical therapy, NICU dietitians, and social workers
